A Beginner’s Guide to the Keto Diet

Thinking about trying the keto diet? You’ve probably seen the buzz — glowing skin, better energy, weight loss — but what is keto, really? This post will walk you through the basics, so you can decide if this low-carb lifestyle is right for you.

What Is the Keto Diet?

The ketogenic diet, or keto, is a high-fat, low-carb eating plan that encourages your body to enter a state called ketosis. In ketosis, your body switches from burning glucose (sugar) for energy to burning fat — both from your food and your stored body fat.

Keto Diet Basics: The Macros

A typical keto diet looks like this:

  • 70–75% Fat: Think avocados, nuts, olive oil, butter, and fatty fish
  • 20–25% Protein: Chicken, beef, eggs, tofu, and more
  • 5–10% Carbohydrates: Mostly from leafy greens and low-carb vegetables

That means skipping sugar, bread, pasta, most fruit, and starchy foods like potatoes or rice.

What You Can Eat on Keto Diet:

  • Healthy fats (avocado, coconut oil, butter)
  • Leafy greens and non-starchy veggies (spinach, broccoli, zucchini)
  • Meats and seafood
  • Eggs and full-fat dairy
  • Low-sugar berries (like raspberries or blackberries)
  • Nuts and seeds (in moderation)

What to Avoid:

  • Sugary foods and drinks
  • Grains and starches (bread, rice, pasta)
  • Most fruits (bananas, apples, grapes)
  • Legumes (beans, lentils, chickpeas)
  • Low-fat or “diet” products with hidden carbs

Potential Benefits of Keto:

  • Weight loss
  • Better blood sugar control
  • Improved mental clarity and focus
  • Reduced cravings and energy crashes
  • Possible support for certain neurological conditions (under medical supervision)

A Few Things to Watch For:

  • Keto flu: A temporary phase of fatigue, headaches, or irritability as your body adjusts
  • Hydration & electrolytes: You’ll need more salt, magnesium, and potassium
  • Not for everyone: Those with certain health conditions should consult a healthcare provider first

My experience

Keto isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution, but it can be a powerful way to reset your body and improve how you feel — if it aligns with your lifestyle. Start slow, plan your meals, and listen to your body. I’ve been trying the rotation of Keto diet and Vegetarian diet and I am feeling really good with my digestion and skin reaction. I will continue of doing so, and keep on track with my health.
